Early Orthodontic Treatment for Kids with Dr. Sherry Sami – MBC#01

Listen:  Apple Podcasts | Spotify

What should parents consider with early orthodontic treatment and braces for kids?

Dr. Sherry Sami is a dual specialist finishing her residency in pediatric dentistry and orthodontics at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

Through her comprehensive approach to care, Dr. Sami has seen integrative treatment make dramatic differences in the lives of patients dealing with allergies, ADHD, autism and sensory integration challenges.

Her practice emphasizes the correlation of a healthy mouth, jaw and airways with a vibrant, energetic body. Subtle changes in these areas can be the catalyst for neck, back and hip problems that are often misdiagnosed as the child grows. Early oral examinations can reveal problems with internal organs, such as the liver or kidneys, which present symptoms on the tongue.

Dr. Sami’s integrative approach also includes airway evaluation that provides dramatic results for the symptoms of ADHD, teeth grinding, bedwetting, mouth breathing and challenging behavioral habits.

In this conversation we highlight a whole-body functional approach that allows parents to guide their child’s oral development, instead of just treating the symptoms.

  1. Great stuff, Dr Steven and Dr Shery.
Many years ago, a patient of mine who had a new baby that wouldn’t suckle,
    went to a ” neo-natal reflex practitioner “,
who pressed into the back of the palate on the inside of the tuberosity,
and pressed both sides firmly, and the baby started suckling, and feeding properly.
Thats where the growth centres of the Maxilla are, between the maxilla and the sphenoid bone.

As you know, I am a Dentist, and when I was 6 y old, my Dentist said ” oh you have a crossbite “.
    And it was NEVER fixed.
I sucked my thumb till I was 5 ( then I went to school, and then I started chewing pencils and rulers instead ).
I developed a significant occlusal Cant, a skew -iff mandible affecting my L TMJ, and significant scoliosis by the time I was a 21 y old dental student.

I would put my hand up for an Interview, ” a Story of a Man “.
I have spent my professional Career learning how to deal with my health issues,
mostly able to be dealt with by a good ” Oro-facial Physician “.

We could talk about ” Pica “, and nutrient deficiency.
Airway deficiency as a child due to Diet and Environment.
the effect of poor maxillary growth and Crossbite, on the cranio-sacral system
the effect of head and neck injury on dental occlusion
the interplay between the TMJs and the upper cervical spine.
How Strep Mutans et al cause the number 1 infectious disease of children on the Planet.
The difference between ‘ crusty white scale ” and ” hard black scale under your gums ”
    and
why Dentists aka ” Oro-facial Physicians” are the FIRST health professional , that you should see , if you want to turn your health around.

Thanks for all your work Dr Steven

    ta David.
