As a part of The Dental Diet, one of the biggest challenges is removing sugar. I like to use paleo dessert recipes to help my patients free themselves of sugar.

It’s a task we avoided for some time – is it even possible to make a brownie without any sweetener whatsoever? Would it just be a frustrating tease?

Why not use Stevia – the sweet-tasting South American herb with no sugar content which has no impact on blood sugar?

Here’s why: there’s a philosophy in the diet world that if we can remove sweet from our palette entirely, eventually we train ourselves not to desire even the taste of sugar.

I get the best results when helping patients say good-bye (or limit) to sweeteners altogether, including “natural” ones. The Paleo diet may use maple syrup, and a plethora of dates. Here’s a paleo dessert recipe that uses none of the above.

Natural sweeteners still spike insulin , cause blood glucose to surge and put you at risk of cavities in your teeth. What’s more, the taste keeps you addicted – your taste buds never really get a chance to detox and break the sugar addiction.

Your brain releases dopamine anytime you eat a sweet-tasting treat. Over time dopamine gets down-regulated requiring more and more of the substance to fulfill the pleasure centers of the brain. What this means for you is a lifetime of longing for a taste that is ultimately contributing to poor health. We all know what happens when you secretly still crave sugar – eventually, you give in, and the cycle repeats.

So we tasked ourselves with figuring out a brownie recipe that – while containing no sweeteners – still possessed a satisfying taste and texture. Ladies and gentlemen, we have achieved this goal! The brownie we finally came up with is a decadent fudgy delight that’s sure to be one of your go-to Paleo dessert recipes! Layers of richness replace sweetness, and the mousse-like interior tastes complex and luxurious. We chose ingredients that are chock full of flavor like maca, butter, coconut, pumpkin, tigernut and vanilla.

To top it all off, this recipe is a breeze to make! Blend all ingredients, bake, and you’re finished and ready to enjoy a truly guilt-free treat. We adorned our brownies with coconut cream, but you could add berries, butter, cinnamon, or anything that sounds good to you! Even a cold glass of milk alone will be satisfying because the brownies themselves are just so good!  Add this to your list of Paleo snack recipes and enjoy delicious and guilt-free snacking!

Ingredients

  • ½ c butter, melted
  • 1 c pumpkin
  • ½ c tigernut flour
  • ¼ c maca powder
  • ½ c cacao powder
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 t vanilla extract
  • pinch sea salt
  • ¼ c coconut cream

 

Procedure

1.  Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

2.  Oil an 8×8 square or 8.5 circular baking dish.

3.  Add all ingredients to a blender and blend until completely smooth.

4.  Spoon mixture into the oiled baking dish and bake for 30 minutes.

5.  Let brownies cool before slicing.
